IEEE Western Puerto Rico Section – Volunteer positions for 2012‏

Greetings to everyone,

Would you like to be an Officer of the IEEE – Western Puerto Rico Section? We need leaders like you who can contribute your expertise and shape the future of our society.

Our Western Puerto Rico Section is currently seeking volunteers for 2012. Volunteers are an essential part of the IEEE organization. IEEE members who volunteer their skills and time take pride in knowing that they play an important role in an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all.

Becoming an IEEE volunteer can be a gratifying and memorable experience. If your skills are suited for organizing conferences and meetings, financial reporting, communicating or maintaining web sites, we need someone with your expertise.

IEEE Section Officer Qualifications (*not applicable to Newsletter Editor and Webmaster)

The qualifications to be an IEEE Section Officer are:

1. IEEE Membership must be current (membership dues must be paid) upon entering office, and must be maintained throughout term of office.
2. Membership Grade of “Member” or above. Member, Senior Member, and Fellow grades qualify; Student and Associate Member grades do not.
3. Membership in the Western Puerto Rico Section is to be held.

*Students, Associate and Affiliate members cannot hold Section officer positions (anyone may serve as newsletter editor or webmaster).

IEEE Standards Education: New e-Magazine and Student Grants

This month, the IEEE Standards Education Committee launched a new free quarterly publication, “IEEE Standards Education eZine,” for those who learn, teach, use, deploy, develop, and enjoy standards. Serving the community of students, educators, practitioners, developers, and standards users, IEEE is building a community of standards education for the benefit of humanity.The IEEE Standards Education Committee also offers grants of US$500 for students and US$300 for faculty mentors to help with graduate and capstone design projects that include an industry standards component. Students report the results of their projects by writing and submitting Student Application Papers. The next deadline for applications is 15 October 2011. IEEE-USA Online Engineering Video Competition

IEEE-USA Online Engineering Video Competition for College Students

IEEE-USA is challenging U.S. college students to create YouTube videos that reinforce for an 11-to-13-year-old “tweener” audience “How Engineers Make a World of Difference.” The organization is seeking to tap the enthusiasm of U.S. college students to spark younger students’ creativity and ingenuity and to inspire their interest in learning about engineering. IEEE-USA also seeks to expand broader public understanding of engineering through the wide dissemination of these videos. The competition deadline is 27 January 2012. IEEE Sections Congress 2011: Presentations and IEEE.TV Coverage Available

IEEE Sections Congress 2011 (SC2011) was held 19 – 22 August 2011, in San Francisco, California, USA. This event brought together over 1,100 attendees from 92 countries to collaborate, educate, and provide input on IEEE programs and projects. The PowerPoint presentations from the various SC2011 Breakout Sessionsare available.IEEE.tv captured key moments of SC2011, including speeches by Vint Cerf, Google Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist; Jim Fruchterman, President, CEO, and Founder of Benetech; and Dr. Sehat Sutardja, Chairman, President, and CEO of Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Members also shared their IEEE experiences with IEEE.tv through member testimonials.

IEEEXtreme Programming Competition 5.0

Think your students can code? Let them prove it! The IEEEXtreme Programming Competition 5.0is an innovative global online programming competition in which a team of up to three IEEE Student members test their collective coding expertise against other IEEE Student programmers around the world. But they won’t just be competing head-to-head against others; they’ll also be competing against the clock. They must test their wit and stamina with only 24 hours to solve IEEEXtreme 5.0!
